Milestone

As often happens with me I had a random thought.  After doing the math I realized I've had my iPhone 4 longer than I've had any other smartphone device.  Prior to the iPhone the longest I had a smartphone before getting bored and moving on was my old Motorola Q9c which I had for nine months.  I've been sporting the iPhone for nine months and one week and have no desire to ditch it in favor of some other device.

Considering I went through six smartphone in three years before the iPhone I think this is something of an accomplishment for me.

Phone Plans

It's coming up on the six month mark since I first got my Evo 4G and already folks are asking me when am I getting a new phone and if I am planning to sell the Evo when/if I get a new one.

The answer to the second question is this:  Not at this time.

The answer to the first question is:  I don't know.

I have two lines on my account with Sprint and being a Premier customer I get annual upgrades on both lines.  It was in December of last year that I added the second line for my mother and gave her a phone for Christmas and when I logged into my account online with Sprint there was the notice stating that I could get an upgrade now.  I asked Mom if she wanted a new phone and she doesn't.  This leaves me with some interesting prospects.

I could go ahead and order a new phone for the second account and activate it on my primary if I wanted to.  This would give me a second smartphone that I could play with and/or root or enable to me finally get around to rooting my Evo without fear of being phoneless if I were to brick it.  The only problem right now is that there just aren't any other phones with Sprint right now that I would be interested in.  The Samsung Epic 4G has some bit of interest from me but after playing with one in the store a couple of months ago I just can't see getting a phone that has so many issues and doesn't even run Android 2.2 yet.  The Android 2.2 update is very important in that it allows app storage on the SD card and includes a newer Java JIT (Just In Time) compiler for software that really makes a difference in how fast apps run.

So, while I could get a second smartphone right now if I wanted it I'm going to hold off for a bit.  CES is next month and there should be some interesting phone announcements coming from that as well as a couple of cellular trade industry shows over the next two months.  Coming up in February I'll be eligible for an upgrade on my primary account as well and that gives me the opportunity to wait it out a bit longer.  There are some fairly interesting pieces of hardware that should be making their way to market over the next few months and I want to be in a better position to take advantage of them.
