Early iPhone 4 Thoughts

Today marks the one week mark of using an iPhone 4 with Verizon and I wanted to jot down here some quick notes about it.  So far I am not regretting my decision to get the device.

The Good So Far

  • The battery life on this thing is incredible!  Seriously, it's hard to believe just how much use I can get out of the iPhone on a daily basis.  It's the first phone in a very long time (back to feature phone days or maybe the old Motorola Q9c) that does not require me to take any sort of power saving measures during the day.  I'm coming home at night with well over a 40% charge left.
  • It's one thing to read about the "Retina Display" and how clear it is supposed to be and another to use a device with such a crisp display on a daily basis.  That alone is almost worth the price of admission.
  • Quick aGPS lock.  Wicked fast!
  • Loving the syncing with my iTunes content.
  • I'm big on the aesthetics of my gear and the iPhone does not disappoint in this department.  I really love the look and feel of the hardware in my hand and I am almost tempted to not put it in a case.  I'll keep putting it in a case though to protect it from possible drops or other sorts of damage.
  • Loving the apps!

The Not So Good Parts

  • Smaller display.  I admit I probably got a bit spoiled by the 4.3 inch display on my Evo but the 3.5 inch display on the iPhone did take a little getting used to.
  • Slower network.  The iPhone is a 3G only device (EV-DO Rev. A) whereas my Evo is capable of 4G (WiMax).  However, since I couldn't use the 4G on the Evo for more than a few minutes at a time due to battery drain issues this is a wash.  I knew I'd have to get used to a bit slower speed when I got the device.
Granted that there are not that many bad points, I felt I should at least mention them.  The good points more than make up for the bad ones anyway.  Overall I am very happy with this device, at least so far, and have no regrets.  I'll do a longer write up after I've had more time with it and can accurately gauge it.
