Android 2.1
Friday, April 16, 2010 at 7:38PM I've been running a release candidate of the forthcoming update to the HTC Hero bringing it to Android version 2.1 and the updated HTC Sense interface for five days now and I have to say that I've been very, very pleased with the performance so far. It's really like having a new phone! The thing that keeps me impressed is that this is only a release candidate of the final version of the update meaning that it's not even "finished" yet. It's one step above a beta test version and one step below what the final version will be.
The thing about this release that impresses me the most is just how snappier the phone is with this version of Android. Typically one can expect that a new or updated operating system will cause older hardware to run slower as more often than not there are steeper hardware requirements. Granted there are some features of 2.1 that do not work, at least so far. The "Live Wallpaper" feature being the most obvious one to me. That being said just about everything on the Hero is running must faster than before.
Switching between home screens is smoother than under 1.5, transition animations are smoother, switching from portrait to landscape mode is almost instant, the onscreen keyboard is both faster and more accurate, and the performance of the Android web browser is the shocker of all the improvements so far in that it's so much faster now that it reminds me of the browser found on the Palm Pre. Even battery life has improved significantly!
Needless to say I do not regret taking a chance on running not-ready-for-prime-time software on my Hero!!!
