Decisions, Decisions
Monday, February 8, 2010 at 4:46PM Just when I thought I'd finally made up my mind about computer related purchases I get a bug up my butt about doing things differently. Case in point: I'm thinking of gutting and rebuilding my PC.
Recently my DVD burner has gone hinky on me. It will still read a disk but burning is a no-go situation. One solution is to transfer stuff via my home network to my Macbook and use its burner to do the job but that is a pain in the butt and not a solution I'm very fond of for many reasons. I've pretty much reached the conclusion that this week I'll have to break down and buy a new burner. It's a twofer really in that I have an internal hard drive that went Tango Uniform on me several weeks ago but I've been putting off pulling for the simple reason that I just don't feel like taking the computer apart. Get a new burner and I can yank the bad drive so I can send it back to Western Digital for yet another replacement under warranty (this will make the third time it's been replaced). As a side note, the replacement drive will go in an external housing so I don't have to keep taking my computer apart. Of course I might just bite the bullet on it and sell it to get rid of the damn problems forever!
Once more I debated getting a combination Blue Ray reader/DVD burner but I'd need to do an upgrade to my video card to handle that bit of technology being added to the mix. If I'm going to do that then I should just look at doing a partial rebuild (CPU, motherboard, RAM, and video card). I priced out a similar rebuild a few months ago for both a Core i5 and Core i7 build for around $500. Of course if I'm going to do that and get the iPad when it comes out at the end of March then that would push any sort of iMac purchase to late fall rather than late summer.
One thing that crossed my mind was that once I get the iPad most of the things I normally use the Macbook for when I'm out and about would end up being done with the iPad meaning the Macbook would not be used outside of the house all that much (not that it is now anyway). This lead to me taking a look again at getting a stand to put the Macbook in, a display adapter, Apple wireless keyboard and mouse, and then hooking the Macbook up to my LCD and using it as a sort of desktop computer at home. It's an idea with merit and I've never given up on the plan to one day double the RAM in the Macbook. Doing something like that would do me over until later in the year on the Mac end of things. Of course all the reports of problems with the new iMacs have me thinking it might be best to wait it out until the next hardware revision sometime this fall for all the issues/bugs to be worked out.
I guess it all comes down to how impatient I am.
