iPad And Other Tech Decisions

Today starts day three of being stuck at home due to the recent winter storm we had here in the Triangle area of North Carolina and it's given me time to do a lot of thinking, reading, movie watching, cat grooming, sleeping, and the like.  One thing I've been considering is future computer/tech plans and purchases and I think I've made up my mind about a few of them.

On the iPad front I've pretty much decided to go with the 16GB WiFi version and not get the 3G enabled one.  First off, I don't really need to be shelling out another thirty bucks a month for yet another service AND the $500 price point can be fit into my budget without hurting too much.  I realized that for most music duties I'd still use my smartphone.  Let's face reality here, most people are NOT going to use a 9.7 inch device for music listening when out and about.  For music listening in the home I'll still use my PC and it's very nice speaker set and when I'm out and about it's far easier to reach into my pocket, pull out the Pre, and switch songs.  As for data on the go I have a few options on that front as well.  There are numerous public WiFi hot spots on my daily commute route and over the next twelve months both CAT and Triangle Transit are going to be adding WiFi to most of their buses.  In a worst case scenario I could also opt to use one of the emerging app options that turn WiFi enabled smartphones into a mobile hot spot.  Windows Mobile, WebOS, and Android all have apps that accomplish this task.  Purchase decision number one solved.

On the smartphone front as of today I am eligible for an equipment upgrade at discount prices from Sprint but I will be holding off on that for at least a month or two.  At the end of this month is the Mobile World Congress where many manufacturers and service providers will be debuting many new smartphone devices and I'd like to see what may be coming down the pipeline over the first four months of the year.  Specifically I want to see if the HTC Supersonic will be coming to Sprint any time soon, or if there are any other Android or Palm handsets that might peak my interest in them.

On the iMac front I've been doing some serious thinking.  Serious.  No doubt the 27 inch models are a thing to lust for but I'm having a hard time imagining having something that big on my desk.  It is some serious overkill!  There's also the $2000 price tag on the cheapest quad-core option, the Core i5.  If I still decide to get a 27 inch model I may opt for the Core 2 Duo option instead or maybe even opt for one of the 21.5 inch models.  Heck, I may even take a look at getting a Mac Mini instead.  For what I do with my computers right now that would be a workable option.  Facing some hard facts I have realized that I just don't play computer games that much anymore so I don't need a lot of horse power for that.  My desktop PC has mainly been used as a media center PC that has been doing double duty as a ripper and encoder for my media collection.  It's even been my HDTV for over a year now!  I've got some more thinking to do on this option and thankfully I have plenty of time to do just that.

Overall, I've created a budget that takes into account my monthly bills, avoiding adding anything else in the way of monthly charges, and a rough idea of a budget using disposable income for my tech purchases through at least the middle of the summer.  I've got some other money making options on the back burner as well so I shouldn't have a problem in the long run.
