Almost Like An All New Pre

This past week at CES was a very good week for fans of the Palm Pre and other WebOS phones! During the Palm press conference a number of nice improvements to the whole platform were announced and it's gotten me happy to be a Palm Pre owner.

Most of my major complaints about the Pre were addressed by Palm at this press conference. An update to WebOS is slated for release in February 2010 (v. 1.4) which will bring Pre owners video recording and editing on the device and support for Flash 10.1. The video recording is something I've found I miss since I've been using the Pre and based on the video shown at the press conference it looks like Palm took its time to get it right the first time. I don't care too much about Flash at the moment but I'll probably install and try it out when it hits next month. One of my constant complaints about the Pre was how Palm was not allowing programmers access to the full hardware capabilities inside the Pre. The Pre has the exact same processor and 3D acceleration hardware inside that the iPhone 3GS has (and the Moto Droid) so I know the hardware was there for some great application potential, it's just that Palm was trying to convince everyone to do programming via HTML, Java, and CSS. That's fine for some programs but to compete with other smartphones coming out today you need to do more. There are some great games on the Pre now with the promise of more to come!

Palm has also opened up to more developers, including quite a few of the bigger developer companies, so we should see the App Catalog expand a lot over the next few months. I know over the last two months we went from just under 500 to over 1000 and more are being added every day. Before you go on about how many apps are available to other platforms let me remind you that for the past seven months the Pre has only been on one carrier, Sprint, and that the platform is still rather new. That is about to change!

AT&T announced at CES that they will have two WebOS phones coming out in 2010 and Verizon is launching the Pre Plus and Pixie Plus this month. That all means good things are in store for folks who are using the Pre. Sure, based on the hardware revisions coming to Verizon it's easy to feel as if us early adopters on Sprint were nothing but glorified beta testers but that is the risk on takes in being an early adopter. Has it been frustrating? Heck yes! Just read my earlier posts about the Pre to see just how frustrating it has been! Right now, though, I'm rather happy to be sitting with my Pre.

The proof is that while I am due an equipment upgrade as a Sprint Premier customer in February I'm in no rush to go and grab up another smartphone. Consider that since February 2008 when I first signed on with Sprint I've had four different smartphones (Moto Q9c, HTC Touch Diamond, Blackberry 8330, and the Palm Pre). Clearly I'm someone who is rather picky about his phone experience.

Phone experience. Consider this for a moment. This is where the Pre excels above other device I've used before and ones out today. The user interface (UI) with WebOS is simply the best out there! It is so easy to navigate around the various features of the Pre using the card based format. Until you use or see it in action you don't really understand why this is probably one of the most important features of the Pre. A friend at work was considering getting a Samsung Instinct but after a couple of minutes with my Pre has decided that's the phone he is getting this week.

It looks like it's an all new day for us Pre lovers out there!
