Perfect Portable Device

I've been doing some thinking lately, which I know is dangerous, about what the perfect device for me on a daily basis would be.  Rumors of an upcoming Apple Tablet along with a prototype device from nVidia as well as my recent debate about purchasing a dedicated ebook reader has me wondering just what I would like to have with me daily.  Here's my description!

The device would need to have an AMOLED (Active Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode) screen between five and eight inches.  A capacitive touch screen is a must.

The CPU would have to be either the 1GHz Snapdragon or 1GHz Tegra chip set.  There would have to be at least 16GB of on board flash memory, accessible for application installs as well as an option for SDHC SD cards for extra memory.

A 3.5mm head phone jack would have to be standard as well as Bluetooth 2.0 with stereo support for wireless talk and listening to music and videos.  The media player would have to be very intuitive and have multiple sync options for transferring music and videos.

For web browsing a Webkit based full HTML browser application would have to be included.  Flash support optional.

Built in 802.11n wi-fi would have to be included but I could learn to live with 802.11g in a pinch.  As for 3G data inclusion of Qualcomm Gobi chip would provide an excellent option for people to pick their celluar broadband service provider without having to buy new equipment if they wanted to switch later on.

I can be flexible on the operating system but I'd really like to see something from the Android camp powering this sort of device.  While there are many things I like about webOS from Palm I'm growing more disillusioned with the rate of development for that platform.  Windows Mobile is so screwed up at the moment I'd be hard pressed to ever purchase another device powered by that platform unless there are some major changes.  And any device coming from Apple running either Mac OS or iPhone OS will be so over priced that it would be out of reach, not to mention probably tied to one carrier exclusively.  That leaves Android.

If the device is easy to handle from an ergonomic standpoint then weight wouldn't be too much of an issue to me.  I'd like to have a removable battery so that I could carry a spare for those "just in case" moments like I do for both my Pre and Macbook.  Running a 1GHz CPU would mean battery life will not be the best but the use of an AMOLED display as well as CPU stepping should help mitigate that.  Let's say four to five hours minimum for battery time with anything else being gravy on the biscuit.

Will something like this every come along?  Probably sooner than you may think it will.  The iPhone and subsequent smart phone revolution of the past four years along with the netbook phenomenon are pointing towards some sort of convergence in the next year or two.  The widespread adoption of 3G networks by the four major wireless carriers along with their roll-out over the next year of their 4G networks makes such a device something that could be practical.  Call it a tablet computer, a mobile internet device, or a smart phone on steroids.  It doesn't matter.  What it will become is something that one day may just be in just about everyone's hands.

I for one will be jumping on board.
