Various Tid Bits

It's been a week since I've done a real update to the site and the only excuse I can come up with is "it's been a rough six days".  It's not a good excuse but it's the one that I'm sticking with right now.

You may, or may not, have noticed a few minor changes to the website in the last 24 hours.  First there is the new image at the top banner.  This is a shot I snapped from a downtown Raleigh parking deck this past summer of part of the skyline.  I had to go with a wider image due to widening the content of the site as well as adding a third column with a live Twitter feed.  For the time being I'm sticking with the current theme and color for the site.  I've tweaked the text size and other such minor things.  Some other stuff I'm doing behind the scenes is setting up Windows Live Writer on my desktop PC to post to the site and I'm looking for a similar software solution for the Macbook (OS 10.6 Snow Leopard).  If anyone has any suggestions please hit me up on the details.

This coming week should be a fairly busy one for me one several fronts.  I've got a new external hard drive on the way so that I can do some serious backups before finally installing the final release of Windows 7 on the PC.  I've been running the Windows 7 RC since May and while it's doing the job I really need to get on board with the final code.  It's my hope that I'll be able to finish up the data saving operation from that Western Digital 1TB Cavier Black hard drive that is about to die.  Seeing as how it was a warrenty replacement drive from one that died earlier this year I'm not holding out much hope.  I'll recover what I can from the drive and ship it back to Western Digital for yet another warrenty replacement.  Maybe the next one will work properly but just in case I'll have that nice large external drive that I'll use for nothing more than dedicated backup duty as well as subscribing to Carbonite for online backups.  Twice bitten, thrice shy!  One thing is for very certain, I'm NOT planning to buy from Western Digital again for a very, very long time.  Longer term I'm seriously looking at getting a Drobo storage unit for my data storage needs on a local basis.

For a while I was looking at saving up for one of the new quad-core 27 inch iMacs but after doing some serious consideration I'm thinking that it's a bit of a stretch.  I like having the Macbook as it's a great portable computer but I also like having a Windows based desktop PC.  That and I can't really fit a 27 inch iMac anywhere on my desk and my apartment is too small for me to add either a larger desk or a second desk.  Instead I think I'll start getting the parts to build me a new Intel Core i7 based desktop.  It'll be cheaper and I can always turn it into a "Hackintosh" by installing Mac OS X onto the thing later on.

That's it for this post.  Stay tuned for another thoughtful post within the next 24 hours!
